n light of Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich pulling their debut album as Atoms For Peace from the music streaming service, Spotify, there has been a lot of discussion around the web about the current model for paying artists their due. In a statement over the weekend, Godrich stated that Spotify’s model of paying out artists may benefit those signed to major labels, but that “small labels and new artists can’t even keep their lights on. It’s just not right. Plus people are scared to speak up or not take part as they are told they will lose invaluable exposure if they don’t play ball.” He went on to say that, had Spotify existed in 1973, albums like Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon would have never been made, as the cost would just be too great.
